The pictures I paint start with a group of eight to ten boards all primed and ready for the first mark. I then use a compass, straightedge and pencils to create the drawing.  Originally I only drew quatrefoils. Because of the combination of straight lines and circles that form a quatrefoil I then chose various ways of painting them by either emphasizing the complete shape of the quatrefoil or focusing on the interior cross and resulting four circles.

Recently, I use the same tools to make the drawings but now I draw circles and lines, free from a geometric form. Then I give myself restrictions and/or guidelines to work within. Will it be a balanced placement of circles or will I balance the composition through colour? Will I restrict line, form (circles) or colour? Asking myself questions like this and then trying solutions in paint is what I find interesting about the process of painting.  I get inspired by looking at fabrics, patterns in nature, work by other artists and the history of art.  Painting is a great journey. Juggling color, line and form keeps me interested along the way.
