Enriching the Arts

About the Travelling Exhibition (TREX) Program

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX) is a government sponsored initiative designed to promote Alberta art and artists through professionally developed exhibitions for use in schools, libraries, healthcare centres, rural institutions and galleries. The mandate is to provide all Albertans with the opportunity to enjoy visual art exhibitions in their communities. Current exhibition locations throughout Alberta can be seen on the AFA website.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) has supported a provincial travelling exhibition program since 1981. There are currently three regional galleries and one arts organization contracted to manage the TREX Program for the AFA:

The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, Grande Prairie Region 1 – Northwest Alberta

Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton Region 2 – Northeast and North Central Alberta

Alberta Society of Artists, Calgary Region 3 – Southwest Alberta

Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, Medicine Hat Region 4 – Southeast Alberta

The Alberta Society of Artists (ASA) has a long history of producing and promoting local, regional and interprovincial travelling exhibitions. The ASA is contracted by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts to develop and circulate art exhibitions to venues throughout southwest Alberta. These exhibitions are designed to easily unpack, install and commercially transport. A comprehensive education package which encourages interactive discussion and enables teachers to lead their students in art making activities within the classroom accompanies each exhibition. Every year we welcome new communities and venues to experience enriching exhibitions at an affordable cost. Exhibition fees are $75.00 per booking. Shipping and artwork insurance are covered by the TREX Program.

The TREX Program assists in making the extensive art collection of the AFA available to Albertans. This growing art collection consists of over 8,000 artworks showcasing the creative talents of more than 1,700 artists. Current touring exhibitions developed by the ASA from the AFA collection include Flying Colours, Geometric Abstraction, Rain Dance and Celebrating the Journey.

The southwest region of the TREX Program is managed through the Calgary office of the ASA located on the third floor of the Crossroads Market at 1235 26th Avenue SE.
