Q & A with the ASA

ASA: Could you tell us about your influences

Kathy: Who and how we are influenced changes over the course of time, however, I have always been drawn to and compelled by realism.  When I came back to creating art in 2001, I spent a lot of time creating landscapes and portrait work.

My work changed dramatically when I was introduced to pastels.  I was able to create detailed work much more quickly and easily than I could with oil and acrylic.  I also found myself drawn to still life as I could control my subject matter and work at my own pace.

I like and appreciate many different styles and genres and recently became intrigued by the work of tonalists. I’ll have to see if and how that plays out in my future given how different it is from my current style.

ASA: Which body of your work would you consider most successful to date?

Kathy: Success comes in many forms and can mean different things at different times in one’s career. Over the past couple of years, my still life work featuring old toys, magazines and other memorabilia has been very successful for me in a number of ways. At this stage though I’m hoping my next body of work, whatever that may be, will be equally successful but from a more personal perspective.
