Donna Jo Massie, Victoria Falls-Lake- Oesa Trail

Donna Jo was born in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.  After immigrating to Canada in 1976, she set up her home/studio in Canmore. The mountain landscape is her source of inspiration. She makes frequent hiking trips into the mountains in all seasons, collecting material for her watercolours, painting and sketching on location. She also teaches popular watercolour classes. These classes, and mountain trips, were the source of her inspiration for her two books: the  Canadian Best Seller, A Rocky Mountain Sketchbook, now in it’s fourth printing and,  her new book, The Joy of Mountains, published by Rocky Mountain Books this Fall.

Q&A with the ASA

Donna Jo Massie, Mt. Robson

ASA: Could you tell us about your influences?

Donna: Generations of my family were born in the Appalachian Mountains where creating was a way of life. My large extended family were weavers, wood carvers, basket makers , hooked rugs and painted. They used local materials to dye and carve, and drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape. I grew up taking part in the cutting of oak trees for splints, using hickory nuts to color fabric and wood, and collecting various bits of wood and grasses to make wall hangings.

ASA: Which body of your work would you consider most successful to date?

Donna: I consider my two books to be the most successful at this time as they contain years of sketches and on location paintings from trips up and down the Rocky Mountains, from New Mexico to Alaska. The books encourage people to be creative and take the time to sit and observe their local environment. This, in turn, creates an appreciation for the environment and, hopefully, a desire to protect it.
