Enriching the Arts

Featured Artist, Dennis Brown, ASA

Dennis Brown, Thetis

Dennis was 4 years old when his grandmother encouraged him to paint with the gift of a basic set of watercolours. This fueled his interest in art and directed his life to creative interests.

After much experimentation and art education, he settled into painting landscapes on location. Painting became his passion and still is today. His artistic journey has been influenced by instruction and guidance from Anita Carson, Ottawa, Ilda Lubane, Edmonton, Skip Lawrence, Maryland, Stephen Quiller, Colorado and Hiroshi Sugimoto, Ome, Japan to name a few.

About 20 years ago Dennis ventured into abstract painting, employing a bright, bold palette and large canvasses . He continues to create in his studio on the waterfront in Ladysmith, B. C.

Q&A with the ASA

ASA: Could you tell us about your influences?

Dennis Brown, Sparks

Dennis: I am influenced by ideas, thoughts, feelings, emotions and dreams. From these areas come the essence of my work, influence my selection of color and often determine shapes and structure of the painting. My mentors continue to inspire me to challenge where I am and why I am expressing myself in a certain way, to get me out of a rut and push on to see what is over the next creative hill.

ASA: Which body of your work would you consider most successful to date?

Dennis: I completed a series of paintings that was generated from how I felt about refugees, how it would feel to lose everything, live in a camp with virtually nothing and often have no hope.
