Leona is an artist of Cree ancestry born in Flin Flon, Manitoba. She received a fine arts certificate from the University of Alberta in 2008. She has taken numerous workshops over the years from Red Deer College, and artists in the Edmonton and surrounding area. Leona’s art is influenced by her own life experiences. April 2016 she moved into her new studio which is located at Colours Art & Framing 7371 104 Street. Leona’s working process: numerous digital photographs are taken, and then downloaded, on to her laptop.  Work often begins with choosing a digital image from a collection of photos, from there; the chosen digital image is cropped and magnified, to enhancing the image, bring out the colour and movement.

She is working in Acrylic on a series of flowers enjoyed for their beauty, capturing the moment in time as they dry and shift, frozen in the movement of the dance. “The Dance of Life, beauty to death”.

Q&A with the ASA

20"x24' Acrylic on Canvas

Leona Olausen, Hanging On

ASA: Could you tell us about your influences?

Leona: The connection between nature and us has always intrigued me. How flowers are so much a part of our world… how they lift our mood, express our love, stop us in our track at the beauty. The life cycle of flowers be seen as an allegory for the life lived…from birth to the splendour and vibrancy of youth, followed by the fullness and strength embodied during the prime years and finally, inevitable death.

ASA: Which body of your work would you consider most successful to date?

Leona: I consider the series I am now working on now (Flora Series) as my most successful. It depended on what is considered successful; to me it is feeling great joy in painting what you love. The camera has greatly influenced how and what I see.  Being able to take these images and enhance the focal point that excites me.
