Her love of travel and exploration of other cultures has seen her complete several art residencies in Ottawa, France, Iceland, and Spain. She has exhibited locally and Internationally and her work can be found in numerous private collections globally.

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way, things I had no words for.” -Georgia O’Keefe.

Q&A with the ASA

What Comes Over Us

Deborah Catton, What Comes Over Us

ASA: Can you tell us about your influences?

Deborah: My artwork is influenced by time and place (location), events and circumstances, anything I encounter in my day to day from something I’ve read, things I have listened to such as music or a discussion I have had, things I have observed and witnessed and how all of that goes through my personal filter of interpretation. My art work attempts to give expression to my inner thoughts, feelings and emotions. It is deeply personal and quite possibly a method to understand my [Self] and my relationship to a world that surrounds me. I work in a completely intuitive way where the content is determined in the moment of creation.

ASA: What would you consider your most successful body of work to date?

Deborah: I believe that each new art work I create is built upon any previous work completed therefore reflecting growth and integrating all that has been expressed and explored previously. For that reason the best work always feels like the one you are working on presently.
