Biography

Isabella

Rose Zivot, Isabella

Born and raised in Calgary, Rose Zivot has enjoyed a distinguished career as an artist for over three decades. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alberta, and then continued with her graduate studies at the University of Washington. Generally inspired by the qualities of pastel, Rose began to explore her own affinity for that medium. She discovered that pastels are spontaneous and brilliant, unrivaled for painting flowers, still life and also the human figure. Rose’s paintings are recognized for their exceptional detail, intense colour and play of light. Rose’s goal is to have each of her paintings represent an attempt to capture a memorable image. She wants viewers to see something much more exciting than it first appears; not only a vivid likeness of beauty, but a feeling of strong emotion. She wants her paintings to come alive for every viewer.

Q&A with the ASA

ASA: Could you tell us about your influences?

Rose: Arts and crafts of all kinds have always interested me, and they soon became a successful part of my life. I also felt a desire to try painting after seeing a pastel painting of a rose in Edmonton. After a trip to the Museé D’ Orsay in Paris, I fell in love with pastels. The works of Degas, Manet, Toulouse Lautrec were my inspiration. I soon discovered I could create pastel pantings with luminous colour, velvet texture, and exquisite blending capabilities.

ASA: Which body of your work would you consider most successful to date?
Rose: “David’s Second Rose” is my most meaningful and emotional painting. I began the painting as a tribute to my husband, David, who was very ill at that time. Because it was so large, I didn’t finish the rose until after he had passed away. It will always be my ultimate memorable achievement.
