Kathy Daley, Market

Kathy Daley has been in group and solo exhibits at art galleries in Alberta and Manitoba since 1995, bringing urban and rural scenes to life, primarily in oil. Her art is in private collections in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Ottawa.

Colours and texture are a big part of her work which focusses on finding the extraordinary in every day moments. There will be more time devoted to that now that her son has grown up and moved out of the house – She’s moving to North Vancouver to resume painting as her full time pursuit.

Kathy has had solo exhibits in the following galleries: Kensington Fine Art Gallery in Calgary, Front Gallery in Edmonton, and The Art Network in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Q &A with the ASA

ASA: Can you tell us about your influences?

Kathy: One of my first important influences is Alberta artist Jim Davies – He made back lanes in Edmonton look dreamy – surreal. All his scenes put you there in an elevated way. There is power in the most serene view. He is an Alberta jewel. I am a fan of Tom Thomson – particularly his colours, textures and abbreviated way of capturing scenes. Vincent Van Gogh’s colours and bent perspectives – the way he slathered paint – I could stare at his stuff all day. Mary Pratt told me through her work it was perfectly okay to paint what’s around you, turkey in foil, a jar of jam – She had a job to do but she needed to paint. She consecrated the every day in such an exceptional way. Georgia O’Keefe. Jane Ash Poitras. I’ll stop here for now.

ASA: What would you consider to be your most successful body of work to date?

Kathy: My most successful body of work to date is a show I put together for the Kensington Fine Art Gallery that featured urban scenes, a lot of them wet, from Vancouver. Looking for light in the dark, brightness when the rain wouldn’t quit. Umbrellas everywhere- daytime looked like night. As often happens, it was a hard time in my life that poured out in the paint and walked out the door in sales. I’m moving to North Vancouver next month and for the first time in my life
painting will be my number one pursuit. I have time and a lot to paint.
