Dana Roman, Snow Squall

Dana has master’s degree in architecture. She worked for 10 years in architectural firms in Prague and Toronto, before she decided to switch to textile art. In 1978 Dana established and for 20 years ran the company, Artacious, designing and painting silk fabrics and artwear.

Since moving from Toronto to Canmore in 1997, Dana became involved in the Alberta art community and is now a full time studio artist, working in acrylics, mixed media and textiles. Dana won many awards for her art locally, nationally and internationally, one of the local awards was the textile art competition for Canmore Art Trust (the triptych now hangs in the Council Chamber at Canmore Town Hall). In 2011, Dana was one of the recipients of the Canmore Mayor’s Spotlight on the Arts Event.

Dana spends a lot of her time up in the mountains, where she gets her main inspiration. She believes that the paintings should be viewed as a visual poetry and therefore affects our senses and emotions without too much talking about it.

Q&A with the ASA

ASA: Can you tell us about your influences?

Dana: My favorite artists are too many to list. Some include:

Paul Klee (1879-1940) – ahead of his time ‘Art doesn’t reproduce visible, it makes visible’
Tapiez (1923-2012) – with his absolutely amazing mixed media pieces
Anselm Keifer (1945-) – mixed media pieces

ASA: What would you consider to be your most succesful body of work to date?

Dana:  It depends what you call ‘successful’. I sold my painted silks in large quantities; kept painting on silk for 30 years +, so they are most successful financially. In 2000 I won the first price in the Silk Painters International competition in professional category. I enjoy painting large abstracts and mixed media pieces, and I feel very good when I really like one, so that must be a ‘success’. I won several “awards’ from Federation of Canadian Artists for my large mountain landscapes, so I consider that also a success.
