Mini Chogak 37Biography

Diana Un-Jin Cho is a Calgary based fibre artist born in Seoul, South Korea. Since young, drawing and designing have always played an important part in her life. After studying in visual communication design and fibre from the Alberta College of Art + Design, Un-Jin began to explore her Korean heritage by studying and blending the influence of the rich textile traditions of fourteenth century jogakbo with her own patterns and designs.

She enjoys an intuitive experimentations and juxtaposition of fibres, and strives to create a positive visual energy that can range from meditative to rhythmic to playful. Diana Un-Jin’s work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Calgary, Alberta Craft Council, Harcourt House Artist Run Centre, and Espace Projet. Her work is displayed in public and private collections throughout Alberta including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and The City of Calgary: Civic Art Collection.

Q & A with the ASA

ASA: Can you tell us about your influences?

Diana: Since I began the Chogak series in 2007, my main influence is the traditional Korean jogakbo. However, I am also influenced by abstract expressionism and pop art and I often find myself drawn to fashion, cartoons and miniature things.

ASA: What would you consider to be your most successful body of work to date?

Diana: I can’t think of one particular body of work which I feel is the most successful in comparison to my other works. But I know that my favourite series to date is my Mini Chogak series which is a collection of small jogakbo-inspired needlepoint pieces. I enjoy the slow, repetitive process of needlework and I like that it allows me to work with various natural threads and fibres on a small scale.
