Biography

As a child I lived on a farm outside of Lloydminster, Alberta.  The winters were very cold and I started drawing and painting to entertain myself.   I developed a passion for art work and honed my skills as much as I could on my own.

The Banff School was my first introduction to the art world.  I attended summer sessions twice, one on a scholarship.  At the end of the summer sessions, I was offered a full scholarship to the Alberta College of Art where I studied for 3 years.  I am married with four grown children.

I have had the opportunity to live in many cities across Canada; Calgary, Red Deer, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Regina and Edmonton.  I taught art classes at the elementary and high school level where ever we were living at the time, often organizing classes where there had previously been none in some cases.  I have kept up my membership with the ASA except for a couple years during this time. However on returning to Calgary I was required to rejoin and so had to submit art work all over again. This I did.

In 1973, we moved back to Edmonton where I undertook the revitalization of the ASA which then consisted of 4 members. Accepting the job as chairperson, and, with the help of the other members, we were able to recruit 21 new members all of high calibre. One of whom was Vivian Thierfelder, and another Maureen Harvey. Since then, the ASA in Edmonton has continued to flourish.

I then enrolled at the University of Alberta in full time printmaking and developed further techniques to use in my work.

Upon my husband’s retirement we travelled to many countries including the Islands of Fiji, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Guatemala, Kenya, and Antarctica as well as travelled many winters throughout Canada and the United States where I continued my career in art and began to work more with large figures, both human and animal.  I used my time to take photos, and create the sketches which I used to start working in my studio.  I still use this method of working.

I am still painting 22×30 inch watercolours on 300 and 400 pound w. c. paper, and have most of them printed as Giclee´s.  I have been a member of the ASA since the early 40’s and am thankful at the age of 95 to still be able to create work and pursue my passion.

 Q & A with the ASA

ASA: Can you tell us about your influences?

Kathleen: I like to use nature and figures to get inspiration, but I have always been most influenced by colour.

ASA: What would you consider to be your most successful body of work to date?

Kathleen: My most sucessful to date would be the body of work I have done with landscape and figures using mixed media.
