Biography

Liz has lived and worked in Calgary for 30 years. In 1997 she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a double major in drawing and painting, from the University of Calgary. Since then, her career has included art teaching, commissions and ongoing painting projects in her Inglewood studio. This studio “STUDIO 4” participates in Calgary’s annual “East Side Studio Crawl” each September.

With her passion for the outdoors, she continually explores new ways to work with acrylics to depict energy and spirit in landscape. Her art exhibition history spans nearly 20 years and her landscapes are represented at Calgary’s Banker’s Hall, Michelangelo Gallery, the Leighton Centre and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts as well as private/corporate collections in Canada, USA and Ireland. Art residencies at the Banff Centre, Emma Lake (Saskatchewan) and Cill Rialaig (Ireland) have facilitated an increasing shift to abstraction in her work.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust

 Q & A with the ASA

ASA: Can you tell us about your influences?

Liz: My greatest inspiration and influence are wild high places, some of which are World UNESCO Heritage sites.  I hike with sketchbook & camera, capturing “Monet in the Mountain” experiences;  then back in my studio I explore ways to express elation and the ethereal on canvas.  Since 2009, Emma Lake Artist Workshops and Banff Centre residency were significant influences in my development as an artist.

ASA: What would you consider to be your most successful body of work to date?

Liz: Major works from my Emma Lake/Banff Centre experiences were on exhibit in “HIGH” at Michelangelo Gallery of Fine Art, Calgary from November 26, 2015 to January 4, 2016.
