Biography

Born and raised in Calgary, David graduated from the Alberta College of Art & Design with a Bachelor of Design degree in Visual Communications. He has worked as a graphic designer for over forty years and during that time he has continued to paint in watercolour and acrylic.

David is a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, The Calgary Contemporary Artists Society as well as the ASA. His paintings are in the collections of Royal Trust, EnCana Corporation, Alberta Art Foundation, Cedarglen Homes, Homes by Avi and The Calgary Real Estate Board.

At times David strives to give his work a more linear look by using the complementary colour of the painted landscape in opposition to the colour of the adjoining line work, thereby giving the piece a more vibrant appearance.

ASA Q & A

ASA: Can you tell us about your influences?
David: I believe my graphic design background has influenced my painting mostly by way of composition and design elements. I let my work evolve on its own knowing that my experience will help me in resolving any issues as the painting develops, but I also have the option to let the spontaneity remain if I feel it enhances the finished piece.
ASA: Which body of work would you consider your most successful to date?
David: I feel one of my more successful series was about “spirits of nature” which included water spirits, forest spirits and moon spirits. This series was done using watercolour and explored a suggested imagery of west coast First Nations without infringing too much on their traditional images.
