Biography

Mary Deeprose, ASA has worked in oils, acrylics and encaustics, but watercolour was her chosen medium for many years, especially in landscapes and florals. However, as a colourist with a tendency to be experimental in an impressionistic style, the medium she has found best suited to her present work is a solvent based paint by Pebeo, much like fluid acrylic. She enjoys creating with this medium because of its fluidity and strong transparent colours. This paint is applied on paper, often in layers. It lends itself to monotypes and the addition of gels for texture. She finds that painting with this medium is an absolute joy, whether it is using flowing forms in subtle tones, or strong variations in bold colours, everything is about colour, expressing a mood or idea.

ASA Q &A

ASA: Could you tell us about your influences?
Mary: Throughout life I have been preoccupied by colour. My mother’s wildly colourful flower gardens and her handiworks, my father’s woodwork, my teenage oil painting lessons, even the incredible prairie sunsets, all influenced my life as an artist. Fabulous teachers along the way have contributed inspiration and positive guidance.

ASA: Which body of your work would you consider most successful to date?

Mary: The joy of painting and trying to get it ‘right’ and experimenting with new mediums is a wonderful journey. My feeling of success springs up whenever I create something of beauty—when colours move in harmony, interacting in surprising ways, contrasting with delicate neutrals —and speak to the viewer. That, for this artist, is success.
