Enriching the Arts

The Benefits of being an Arts Volunteer in Alberta

Why volunteer? Volunteers can be found in all levels of many non-profit and charitable arts organizations in Alberta. The roles these volunteers fill are diverse – anything from assisting at the Annual General Meeting, to organizing mailing packages, to accepting a position on the board of directors.

Without volunteers, many of these arts organizations would not be able to function at the same capacity that they do now, or impact as many people. So what motivates these volunteers to donate their time? Keep reading for some ideas about the benefits of being a volunteer!

GET INSPIRED

Volunteerism is a great way to get involved with something that you feel passionate about. By getting involved in the arts community, volunteers provide essential support to programs that benefit artists. If you feel strongly about arts activism and advocacy in Alberta, supporting these programs is a way to make your voice heard. Many people also make new friends, meet new artists and gain valuable new contacts through contributing volunteer hours to an arts organization.

You are not required to be a full-time artist to have an interest in the arts, or to make a big difference in the arts community. All that we require is a little bit of your time!

GET INVOLVED

So you want to become a volunteer – how do you get involved? First, find an arts organization that inspires you and reach out to them – often they will be more than happy to hear from you! Speak with their volunteer coordinator to learn about the positions available, and to find a role that best suits your skills and interests. You might even learn some new skills! Want to know more about how to display artwork? Assisting in the setup and takedown of exhibitions could help. Want to gain experience as an arts teacher? Volunteering to host some workshops could offer some insight into teaching the arts.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Although offering to fill a position at a fundraiser or assisting with artwork delivery might not feel like making a big difference, you will be making a difference that matters! Many non-profit and charitable arts organizations in Alberta rely on volunteers to function. By compiling mailing packages, assisting at the AGM or contributing to a committee, you are enabling the organization to impact many more people than it would be able to without your help.

The Alberta Society of Artists would like to thank all of our volunteers for the hard work that they do throughout the year. The organization would not be the same without you!

SPREAD THE WORD!

Arts organizations like the Alberta Society of Artists benefit from the old-fashioned “word of mouth” recommendation. This day in age, this is accomplished through the use of social media such as facebook and twitter. As they say “Sharing is Caring”….support your favorite arts organization by following and sharing their media streams!
