Enriching the Arts

Welcome to a new year at the Alberta Society of Artists!

Changes to expect in 2015

The Alberta Society of Artists is pleased to welcome new and returning members to another year of exhibitions and events. A lot of changes have happened here in the past year, and more are planned for the Alberta Society of Artists in 2015. Our first 2015 blog post is going to cover some of the events, exhibitions and changes that the membership can expect in the next few months.

Student Scholarship Award and Exhibition

The Alberta Society of Artists offered its first two scholarship awards at the beginning of 2015! The Alberta Society of Artists is committed to supporting arts education throughout the province. In support of student artists, the ASA offers two scholarship per year to students enrolled in a full-time visual arts program in Alberta.

We received many wonderful submissions from students in universities all over Alberta and enjoyed seeing the many different kinds of artwork produced by student artists. It was difficult to pick the winners! However, we will make an announcement soon regarding who received the scholarship. Scholarship winners will receive $1000 to go towards their education, as well as an exhibition of their work.

Changes in the ASA Office

There are also changes occurring in the ASA office. The Alberta Society of Artists regrets to announce the resignation of our current program coordinator, who organized exhibitions and events, booked gallery spaces, coordinated volunteers and much more. Her presence will be missed at the ASA office. We appreciate all the hard work that she put into the organization and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavours. Please be patient with us as we move forward and transition into a new program coordinator.

Upcoming Exhibition and Events

The Alberta Society of Artists has a lot of exhibitions happening right now – four in the next few months! Our first student exhibition, titled Emerging Artists Unleashed, is at the Walterdale Theatre in Edmonton from February 4 to April 18, 2015. This exhibition includes student artists from all over Alberta that submitted their artwork to the Alberta Society of Artists.

The exhibition The Artist Lens is happening in Calgary this week. Located in ArtPoint Gallery, the exhibition explores photography as a medium of expression and celebrates the spectrum of techniques in photography. This exhibition runs from February 5 to 28, 2015 with an opening reception scheduled for February 6.

We received many wonderful submissions for our exhibition The Artists’ Choice! It is showing in two locations – from February to March it will be located in the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium and from March to April it will be located in the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. Come check out the pieces that artists from all over Alberta selected to submit to this exhibition!

Next month, Self Portraits, an exhibition examining the perception of self, is coming to the Crowsnest Pass Art Gallery from March 28 to April 26. The artists in this exhibition explore their own intentions of self-presentation through portraiture. Showcasing a variety of artistic media, each artist participates in a deconstruction of the self through portraiture rather than the creation of a traditional portrait.
